Reflection

Do you know the day you were baptized? Does it make any difference to you whether you are baptized or not? Are you living out your baptismal call to holiness and mission?

“Jewish ceremonial washings and John’s baptism were merely

symbolic. These rituals invited people to acknowledge their

sinfulness and need for repentance. For the apostles, the baptism

given them by Jesus was more than a symbol. It took away the sins

of those who repented, and it conferred God’s Holy Spirit.” “As

one who is sinless, Jesus has no actual need for repentance (Heb

4:15; 1 Pet 2:22). He nevertheless receives John’s baptism to

identify with sinners as part of the Father’s plan to save them (CCC

536).” It will be on the cross that he will take the place of sinners,

taking the punishment due to sin upon him so that we might

receive forgiveness, salvation and new life through him, from him

and in him. “The voice of the Father, the Baptism of the Son, and

the descent of the Spirit mark this episode as a revelation of the

Blessed Trinity.”

The heavens opened: Greek verb Schizo, to rip or tear. Heaven

was thus “torn open” at the sound of God’s voice and the descent

of the Spirit (Is 64:1). And the Spirit, descended like a dove

upon him: Jesus’ baptism inaugurates a new beginning for the

world through the Spirit and prefigures our own cleansing through

baptism. You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

It confirms Jesus divinity and mission given by the Father.

Baptism is the sacrament of Christian initiation in which we are

joined to Jesus Christ, become members of his Church, and are

reborn as God’s adopted children. We receive the gift of the Holy

Spirit, and Original Sin and personal sin are forgiven. Baptism fills

us with sanctifying grace that heals our human nature wounded by

sin by giving us a share in the divine life of the Holy Trinity. “We

Catholics see baptism as something more than just an event in our

past. Baptism gives us an ongoing relationship with Jesus Christ,

joining us and our eternal existence to the eternal life of Christ.

Baptism does not just cover up our sins. It takes them away and

offers union with Christ, so that everything we do can be done for

the glory of God. Baptism makes our lives a sacrament, and

imparts to our finite, physical actions an infinite, spiritual

¿Sabe usted el día que fue bautizado? ¿Hay alguna diferencia

para usted entre una persona bautizada y una no bautizada? ¿Está

viviendo su llamado bautismal a la santidad ya la misión?

"Las purificaciones de los judíos y el bautismo de Juan era

meramente simbólicos. Estos rituales invitaron a la gente a

reconocer su pecaminosidad y necesidad de arrepentimiento. Para

los apóstoles, el bautismo que les dio Jesús era más que un

símbolo. El bautismo limpia de pecados a aquellos que se

arrepienten, y les confiere el Espíritu Santo de Dios. " "Como

alguien que está sin pecado, Jesús no tiene necesidad real de

arrepentimiento (Hebreos 4:15; 1 Pedro 2:22). Él, sin embargo,

recibe el bautismo de Juan para identificarse con los pecadores

como parte del plan del Padre para salvarlos (CIC 536). "Va a ser

en la cruz que va a tomar el lugar de nosotros los pecadores,

tomando el castigo debido al pecado sobre él para que nosotros

podamos recibir el perdón, la salvación y la nueva vida por él,

con él y en él. "La voz del Padre, el bautismo del Hijo, y del

descenso del Espíritu marca este episodio como una revelación

de la Santísima Trinidad".

Los cielos se abrieron: verbo griego Schizo, rasgar o desgarrar. El

Cielo fue "desgarrado" en el sonido de la voz de Dios y la venida

del Espíritu (Is 64: 1). Y el Espíritu, descendió como una paloma

sobre él: el bautismo de Jesús inaugura un nuevo comienzo para

el mundo a través del Espíritu y prefigura nuestra

propia purificación por medio del bautismo. Tú eres mi Hijo

amado, en ti tengo puesta mis complacencias”: la voz del Padre

confirma la divinidad de Jesús y la misión para la cual ha sido

enviado.

El bautismo es el sacramento de la iniciación cristiana por el cual

nos unimos a Cristo Jesús, nos hacemos miembros de su Iglesia, y

renacemos como hijos adoptivos de Dios. Nosotros recibimos el don

del Espíritu Santo, y el pecado original y el pecado personal son

perdonados. El bautismo nos llena de gracia santificante que sana

nuestra naturaleza humana herida por el pecado, dándonos una

participación en la vida divina de la Santísima Trinidad. "Nosotros

los católicos vemos el bautismo como algo más que un evento en

nuestro pasado. El bautismo nos da una relación continua con

Jesucristo, uniendo nuestra existencia terrena a la vida eterna de

Cristo. El bautismo no se limita a cubrir nuestros pecados. Nos los

quita y nos ofrece la unión con Cristo, para que todo lo que hagamos

se pueda hacer para la gloria de Dios. El bautismo hace de nuestra

vida un sacramento, e imparte a nuestras acciones finitas, físicas, una
