Reflection

"Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men."

There are many meanings to this phrase. The most fundamental is that all of us are called to (a) follow Jesus and (b) evangelize. All of us are called to be "missionary disciples." We are made to be missionary disciples, and there is something important missing in our lives if we are not living as missionary disciples. Stay tuned for upcoming opportunities to grow in missionary discipleship.

There is also another meaning: "Fishers of men" is a term that has long been associated with priests. Priests are, among other things, fishers of men. Jesus is calling - has always been calling - a substantial number of men to drop everything and to follow him into the ministerial priesthood. Is it possible that he is calling you?

I've only been a priest for 2.5 years so I'm still in a "honeymoon phase," but right now I would say that if I were to live 100 lives I would choose to be a priest 100 times over. I love being a priest! I'm so grateful that Jesus called me to drop my nets and to follow him in this way and that he gave me the grace to say "yes." What better way to live than to bring people to God and God to people? To offer the holy sacrifice of the Mass everyday? To be an instrument of God's mercy via the sacraments?

I also love the opportunity to invite others into the ministerial priesthood. Last Sunday we had a special Mass & reception at the cathedral for young men open to the priesthood (see photo on the cover). Over seventy young men attended! The future's looking bright in our diocese, but all of us need to pray and offer sacrifices for these men.

Reflexión

«Vengan conmigo, y los haré pescadores de hombres».

Esta frase tiene muchos significados. El más fundamental es que todos estamos llamados a (a) seguir a Jesús y (b) evangelizar. Todos estamos llamados a ser discípulos misioneros. Fuimos creados para ser discípulos misioneros, y hay algo importante que falta en nuestras vidas si no vivimos como tales. Estén atentos a las próximas oportunidades para crecer en el discipulado misionero.

Hay también otro significado: “pescadores de hombres” es un término que desde hace mucho tiempo se ha asociado con los sacerdotes. Los sacerdotes son, entre otras cosas, pescadores de hombres. Jesús llama —y siempre ha llamado— a un número considerable de hombres a dejarlo todo y seguirlo en el sacerdocio ministerial. ¿Es posible que te esté llamando a ti?

Solo llevo 2 años y medio como sacerdote, así que todavía estoy en una especie de “luna de miel”, pero ahora mismo diría que, si pudiera vivir 100 vidas, elegiría ser sacerdote 100 veces. ¡Me encanta ser sacerdote! Estoy muy agradecido de que Jesús me haya llamado a dejar mis redes y a seguirlo de esta manera, y de que me haya dado la gracia para decir “sí”. ¿Qué mejor manera de vivir que llevar a las personas a Dios y a Dios a las personas? ¿Ofrecer el santo sacrificio de la Misa todos los días? ¿Ser instrumento de la misericordia de Dios a través de los sacramentos?

También amo la oportunidad de invitar a otros al sacerdocio ministerial. El domingo pasado tuvimos una Misa y recepción especiales en la catedral para jóvenes abiertos al sacerdocio (ver foto de portada).

¡Asistieron más de setenta jóvenes! El futuro se ve prometedor en nuestra diócesis, pero todos necesitamos orar y ofrecer sacrificios por estos hombres.
